1. Experience – When you look to hire a content writer, check samples of their work on projects that are the same or similar to yours. The writer doesn’t necessarily need the exact experience you’re looking for — matching your project requirements to the letter — but they should have decent writing skills and know correct spelling and grammar — even if you don’t.
2. Confidence – Your writer shouldn’t doubt his or her abilities to tackle and finish the project.
3. Advice – The writer should be able to advise you on the direction of the project if you’re clueless, lack focus, or need more info to make a decision.
4. Good communication – Obviously, writing is a form of communication, but your writer should have the common sense to contact you if problems arise if they has any questions. They shouldn’t be afraid to reach out, nor should you be afraid to get in touch. Communication is a two-way street, and if it’s one-sided, it’s a roadblock.
5. A thick skin – Your writer shouldn’t take any changes you make personally; an ability to keep his or her ego in check is essential. I’ve developed a thick skin over the years, and have come to realize that some clients don’t always know what they want. But once a writer provides content, it can inspire changes. So, an ability to “go with the flow” is essential. Ideally, you’ll both discuss or plan the project ahead for a smooth working relationship.
